I’m struggling
sweat runs down my forehead
stress builds in my body
I’m trying to survive
“this is the life, trying to survive, can you look into my eyes?”
the more I work
the more the government takes
I’m stuck in a gridlock
I’m not rich
I’m only a CNA
and I have three roommates
I can’t live on my own
“this is the life, trying to survive, can you look into my eyes?”
the more I work the more I’m taxed
I lost eight hundred dollars to taxes this paycheck
after rent, medicine, and fuel I have three hundred left for food
all hopes and plans dashed for the month
another month another fight for survival
I’m living paycheck to paycheck
I desperately look for new opportunities on the weekends
I can’t afford college
“this is the life, trying to survive, can you look into my eyes?”
the multimillionaires and the bankers monopolize the media
I watch them get tax breaks and bonuses
as I sweat
as my poor heart races
as I try to survive
and I’m not the only one
I ask them to look into our eyes
we can all see the off shore accounts and money laundering
why do we allow them to get away with it?
the common person suffers and the rich swell their pockets
will we accept that this is the world we’re living in?
will we all keep living for a few dollars more?
is this the life?

Literature
sometimes pretty words are all we can hope for
and sometimes we want more.
more than what we have,
more than what we can give
we want to be more than we could ever be because
we've set expectations higher than the skyscrapers lining
new york city's horizon and
there's more of them than there are
nightlife lights in the windows of people
who can't sleep at night because
they're looking out at the cityscape and wondering
if there's even more in life to hope for.
maybe this is all we have.
maybe all i can give to the world is
metaphors about galaxies
or vague admittance of
caged mind-demons rattling against their chains or
the way middle school / high school / life
has set me ablaze or

Literature
something to smile about
Nobody noticed the creeping phlox
as it bloomed in petals of periwinkle,
the lively myrtles were ignored in a rising wave of
panic!
Loud and swift, it descended upon us,
doors closing,
lights going out...
I am cautious.
I am careful.
I delight in the crocus's popping up,
bringing a little color
to this kind of somber time.
I dream of the cherry trees flowering,
of the smell of lilacs
and the forsythia beaming all sunny.
I take a deep breath and don't panic.
I won't let this overshadow the beauty of Spring.
Literature
full circle
When winter's clutches release
the last snow leaving us in peace
the wind slows, warms, welcomes
the sun it charms, flirts, beckons
everything white evolves to brown and green
Springtime emerges, it's embrace serene
Growth all round us, the trees are reborn
roses abound with fistfuls of thorns
The summer sun's greedy, taking command of the sky
bleeding sunsets glorified
for that heat we thank the sun
and say a sincere goodbye when Autumn has begun.
the leaves, they color, then wither and curl
get caught in the wind and leisurely swirl
landing gracefully they carpet the land
and fade away at winter's command.

Wow, a big swing. It really hits home, and evokes memories of this very struggle. Really great piece.
